Preventative Tips for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021, a time to raise awareness of the disease where 1 in 8 women will be affected during her lifetime.
The disease comes in many forms, with different ways to describe them. Doctors determine the type of breast cancer a patient has by collecting a sample of cells from their breast tumor during a breast biopsy or breast surgery. From here, the doctor examines the cells under a microscope and classifies them by how sensitive they are to estrogen and progesterone. They also examine the cell’s protein levels and other characteristics to help predict the best form of treatment.
What are the Risk Factors?
Numerous factors can increase an individual’s chance of being affected by breast cancer. Studies have shown that the following are common risk factors:
- Being female
- Having dense breasts
- Aged 50 years and older
- Family history of breast cancer
- Mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes
How to Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer from forming, there are things women can do to help reduce their risk, including:
- Frequently exercising
- Going to get a screening
- Regularly examining your breasts
- Limiting your alcohol intake
- Not smoking
- Keeping a healthy weight
- Eating plenty of fiber
Dr. Flippin’s Mission
Breast cancer is a topic that is near and dear to our hearts at UZURI, as Dr. Flippin is a triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) survivor. TNBC is an aggressive type of breast cancer that does not have estrogen, progesterone, and protein receptors. Doctors often treat TNBC with chemotherapy, lumpectomy, mastectomy, and radiation.
Since her diagnosis, Dr. Flippin has been 11 years cancer-free and remains passionate about reminding everyone about the importance of self-examinations, mammograms, clinical breast examinations, and genetic testing. Her non-profit—Flippin to a Cure—is focused on advancing education and addressing the disparity of care to women in underserved and under-represented communities. The non-profit supports survivors emotionally, financially, and spiritually so they can focus on their recovery. Please donate to the cause to help support breast cancer patients and their families.
We’d also like to send a big thank you to Sonya Ltd. for designing and gifting Flippin to a Cure with a special piece this year to celebrate Dr. Flippin’s journey and recovery from triple-negative breast cancer. We welcome you to shop on their website and explore their gorgeous catalog of earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings.
